The use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has seen an exponential increase across different fields of application including sport and exercise sciences in recent years. However, despite its portability and relative robustness against motion artifacts, the application of fNIRS in sport-specific settings remains scarce. The aim of this scoping review is to provide a comprehensive overview on the use of fNIRS in sport-specific settings, current challenges, and future research lines for the application of fNIRS in sport and exercise sciences.
